I love to read, but the more blogging and writing I do, the less time and energy I have for books – an occupational hazard of sorts. I am much more easily distracted than I used to be – blame it on social media, aging, sudden onset ADD – who knows – so when a book grabs my attention and keeps it from the start, I know it’s a good one.
One such book is The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker.

This is Walker’s first novel, and it’s the heart-wrenching and fascinating story of Julia, an 11 year old girl. Julia is coming of age during an apocalyptic slowing of the earth’s rotation. As the planet adapts to the new phases of the moon and lengthening of day and night, Julia adapts to the fissures in her own life, including the destruction of her parent’s marriage, the illness that affects many around her, and the mysterious disappearance of her beloved grandfather. I highly recommend this book for a great summer read. You can buy it on Amazon by clicking through my “I recommend” link on this page.
If you’re not in the mood for a big, loud, special effects filled movie like Superman, Batman, The Avengers and so on, you must see To Rome with Love, Woody Allen’s latest bit of brilliance.

Click picture above for a preview of the film.
Say what you will about his personal life and the choices he’s made (not so great, right?), he is a master storyteller who knows how to tap into the zeitgeist of the moment and make you laugh at the same time. As he’s done with his recent films Match Point, Vicki Cristina Barcelona and Midnight in Paris, Allen takes you on a gorgeous tour of the city where his film is set, Rome. The cast is fabulous – Alec Baldwin, Ellen Page, Roberto Benigni and the insanely beautiful Penelope Cruz – and the stories are funny, romantic, ridiculous and captivating. This movie is worth the $10.00 you’ll pay to see it in a theater – unlike so many others I’ve seen recently.
Now if only there were new Mad Men episodes on during the summer…

LOVED To Rome with Love. It was Woody Allen of old, as funny, sharp and insightful. I think it was better than almost anything except Annie Hall and Midnight in Paris. Cast amazing. Thanks for the book rec, I am always looking for new idea, great to find one here.

Thanks for the recommendations. I’m especially pleased to see that Woody Allen’s latest is worthwhile. I agree – there are so many movies out there that are not. Too much emphasis on violence and special effects. I just want to watch a good story. I loved Match Point. And I liked Midnight in Paris a lot. Did not see Vicky Christina Barcelona…but should, eh?

That book has been on my “to-read” list for a while. I guess I need to move it to the top.

I read about that book in People Magazine, it sounds really good!
You have me curious about the Age Of Miracles. Was there a miracle in the story? How does slower gravity affect humans? I think YOU should write a book someday.
yes, someday…
These sound great based on your recommendations.
I saw To Rome With Love and really liked it – and managed to do it on value Tuesday, for only $6.00. I have really liked Woody Allen’s latest films, although I agree with you, Sharon, about his life choices.
I heard about this book, on NPR I think, and will put it on my list. Thanks!
The book is absolutely worth reading.
Sounds like an interesting read!

You’re absolutely right about Woody Allen – I thought he was such a weirdo, until I saw Annie Hall – then I could appreciate his artistic ability and separate it from his lifestyle/child-bride. That, and he and his wife have been married for 15 years, so who are we to judge?
I am looking forward to seeing this movie – thanks for the recommendation!!

In my humble opinion, Woody Allen is a genius. Geniuses are often a little on the crazy side. If you haven’t seen “Radio Days,” watch it as soon as you can. It’s magical.
I just discovered your blog today. Enjoyed reading thru quite a few days. I too was always an avid reader. I don’t seem to read books like I used to (but I spend so much more time on my laptop… reading… that makes a difference I think} This is the 3rd review I’ve read a review of Age of Miracles. I am definitely going to have to read it.

I love Woody Allen films. My favorites are Sleeper, Radio Days, Annie Hall, Crimes and Misdemeanors and Bullets Over Broadway. I’m definitely going to have to check this one out.
