The place that I live is about as neighborhood-ish as it gets – Main Street USA. With around 3600 homes and a population of around 10,000, Rossmoor, California is adjacent to and dependent on Los Alamitos and Seal Beach for the basic necessities like grocery stores and pharmacies. Rossmoor is the epitome of suburbia – a great place to raise a family. The three communities all feed into one high school, so by the time our kids had graduated from the public schools we knew a lot of people around here – which can sometimes be a problem, especially when I need to run to the store for cold medicine or a missing ingredient for something I’m cooking, and maybe I haven’t gotten myself dressed and looking decent yet, and of course then I run into five different people I haven’t seen in a while. ARGH!
But then there are other times, like last Friday night, when living here is close to magical. We went to one of the neighborhood parks (there are two, both very nice and very well-used) to hear a Bob Seger cover band called Turn the Page. What started out as just us and another couple quickly grew to a group of nearly twenty. Everyone knew everyone. I even ran into one of my favorite bloggers, Vivienne Wagner. Everyone brought food and wine. There was a not-so-big audience – but there were plenty of people up and dancing, and lots of us were singing along. There were little kids running around, elderly folks rocking out in their chairs – it was just about perfect. When the band stopped playing at 8 pm, we didn’t. We stayed around until around 9:30, continuing our impromptu party. Some of our kids came around. We finished all of the wine. And the food just got more and more delicious.
For those of you in my community who would like to attend the next concert in the park, the date is Friday, July 27 at 6:30 pm at Rush Park. My old friend Bob Hirschhorn, who taught my kids to swim, (there’s that neighboorhood-ish thing again) and his band The Elm Street Band will be playing classic rock – and they are good! And if you don’t live here, find a concert in the park near your home, pack a picnic basket and go. You’ll feel good, sitting in the night air and enjoying your friends and family.
It doesn’t get more All-American than that.

HAPPY AND SAFE FOURTH OF JULY TO ALL OF MY READERS!

Great blog post and absolutely gorgeous bead creation!
What a wonderful post about a picnic in the park, listening to a band, and seeing neighborhood friends. Looks like a really nice place to live!
Sharon, fun pictures, and sounds like a fun evening! I love outdoor concerts–haven’t been to one in a while, though. I hope we’ll have some good ones here in RI. (I love that beaded cardinal, too!)
Looks like a wonderful place to live!

You just made me want to move.
Except I love my house too much. But maybe that will be us in a few years once the kids get older. (I did just run in to a bunch of people I knew at the grocery store…)

Small towns and close-knit neighborhoods are so great for so many reasons. Concerts in the park where you actually know people is definitely one of them!
