I don’t need to tell you that there’s a LOT of sex in the media and our culture – and most of the people who are having all that sex are young, gorgeous, and perfect. Watching two people who are impossibly beautiful having choregraphed sex is pretty fabulous – I mean, who doesn’t think Channing Tatum and, well, just about anyone is sexy? That’s easy. Sexy at my age? That’s a little more difficult. Not that we don’t FEEL sexy – but to watch two fifty-somethings doing it and find that sexy is quite an accomplishment.
That’s what’s so great about “Hope Springs.”

The film itself – the script, the story – is ok. It’s not something you haven’t seen before – couple grows apart, nearly loses each other, finds their way back to a more fulfilling and happy relationship – but Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones as Kay and Arnold Soames are so genuine and believable, and their relationship such a mess, that you really do feel the joy when they attempt (quite a few times) to rekindle their sex life. She’s the epitome of the middle-aged frump, and he’s the perfect example of a disconnected and robotic husband – almost to the point of caricature. One thing that makes this movie work so well is the honesty they both bring to the conversation each time they meet with their therapist, played by Steve Carell in a non-comedic role. There’s nothing about the story that will surprise you, but if you’ve been married for a long time there will be something that makes you elbow your spouse and say “ha – just like us!”
The most touching parts of the movie – for me – are the sex scenes. Watching two older people who love each other expressing those feelings and that connection is in some ways much sexier than two young, gorgeous people who met 6 hours ago and are slamming each other up against a perfectly decorated bedroom wall, which seems to happen a lot in movies. Though his face is unflinchingly old, and her body is noticeably spreading and squishy, when the characters kiss again for the first time after a LONG time, it’s really, really hot.
Us Weekly magazine wrote a blurb about “Hope Springs” that really pissed me off. This was how the blurb started:
“Who’s psyched to see an old couple discuss why they stopped having sex? Anyone? Anyone?”
(As if an “old couple” shouldn’t even be allowed to have a sex life at all-and I would hardly call these two “old”).
Well, yes Us Weekly. I was psyched. Maybe not in the way I’d be psyched to see, say, Ryan Gosling and Scarlett Johannson, but in a much more emotionally real and relatable way. I knew how they felt – what couple doesn’t go through days, weeks, months of disconnection? Extend that to 4 years and that’s where these two lonely, sad people are in their lives. So yes, it is hot when they finally find their way back to each other. Maybe not for young people – though if they have a shred of sensitivity, I bet they would find it kind of hot, too.
Take a look at the list of movies playing at one of my local theaters this weekend:

How many of those movies are made for people my age? One. Others may be enjoyable and fun to watch, but believe me, when the marketing department for, say, “The Bourne Legacy” planned their ad campaign, I was NOT their target audience.
“Hope Springs” is a film that will reach your heart and maybe even make you feel sexy. Because there’s nothing like knowing that your spouse, sitting next to you at the movies, will know just what you mean when you elbow him or her and say “ha – just like us!” Now that’s hot.

My spouse dragged me to that new Bourne movie, and it was AWFUL. Next movie choice is mine, though. Guess I know what to pick!

I agree with your analysis of the movie, but it was definitely worth watching! Once again I am astounded at how great an actress Meryl streep is! She played the frustrated housewife so well! Thanks for the contest entry as well. The Bag from Dewey Street Designs looks very roomy and fun!

I wanted to see this movie when I first saw the trailer. Your post makes me want to see it more. US Weekly’s comment makes me sick and sad. How many people stay married long enough to have these feelings? It should be applauded. Thanks for posting about this movie – I’m writing a note to remind myself to rent it when it comes out {now you know my age group, right?}.

Right! You can probably watch it on cable, too, someday!
NOW….I can’t wait to go see it. Once everyone else’s kids go back to school and the mall gets less crowded!
I love Meryl and am looking forward to seeing this movie!!!
I really need to go see this movie, Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep are 2 of my all time favorites anyway. Yeah, the ‘Young” sex is pretty hot, but the older sex…well.. that actually has a lot more meaning and feeling involved, meaning..it’s not just hormone based “hots” for the opposite sex. What sickens me most about our current culture is the term “hook up”. Maybe i’m just old fashioned, but the actual meaning of that term, empty, feelingless sex for sex sake leaves a lot out. Great review!

I agree, hook-up is a pretty awful concept.
There aren’t very many movies that I want to see anymore – for all reasons you mention in your post. I’m so glad you reviewed this movie because this is one that I thought I might like. Now I’ll definitely talk my husband into going to see it. And I’m with you on the Us Weekly comment. Women Over 50 are one of the largest demographic now and the media needs to start paying more attention to that! You and I can’t do it all by ourselves!! HA HA!

My objection with the movie was not the content, but the way the studio is trying to sell it to the public–as a comedy; and it’s not. There are some comedic moments, but the majority of the movie deals with very real, not funny, aspects of marriage–esp. middle-aged marriage. Another objection was the stereotypical way this couple was portrayed. Yes, you are right, Jones’s Arnold was a caricature…and to a large extent, so was Streep’s Kay. Did they have to make them seem SO out of touch with the modern world? Your perspective, I liked, the way the filmmaker handled things, not so much.

I think the caricatures were deliberate – by making them so “everyman” the audience was shown how even ordinary people have serious problems. Unfortunately I think many people are that out of touch.
The Chicago Suntimes movie page shows Rolling Stone calls Hope Springs “Hilarious and Heartfelt.” Young and sexy actresses of today can only hope to be as good of an actress as Meryl Streep; ya gotta have experience and age for that. So here’s to age and wisdom!
Meryl Streep is truly in a class by herself. Even in this movie, with a very simple and ordinary character, she is so authentic.
So depressing what the studios offer…i thought your movie listings said it all. I have been so glad to see that the movie has been feted by other publications other than US. Can’t wait to see it, thanks for the suggestion. I find I read a movie and sometimes forget about it…but if a friends mentions it I make a real effort to see it, thanks Sharon.

So glad to see movie reviews like this, thank you for giving us your take. I’ve also read some reviews that hated it, some that loved it. Wonder if we should sort by age? She is the queen of boomer movies and can add this to Mamma Mia!

It is so refreshing when they make a movie for people my age. It so seldom happens. Can’t wait to see this one. Thanks for the review.

I had to skip by all the movie talk- I haven’t seen it yet and I don’t like to hear/read about it at all before hand. That proves to be quite an effort sometimes. LOL I’ll come back and read it once I’ve seen it!
Anyway- the bag is adorable! I’d love a chance to win it! Thanks!

Really am looking forward to seeing this movie. I got a chuckle out of the trailer and the cable tv reference (was very familiar!). As for US magazine….well just another instance of marginalizing us “old” people.

I really want to see Hope Springs. I love Meryl Streep and enjoy her in the movies she acts in. I think movies like this are great as it portrays real life and with older people being focused.
I love Meryl Streep. I’m young (et) but I don’t go to he movies just to watch the sexy people do it either. I want a good story- or a knife weilding maniac.

I’d like to see this, it is nice to see movies not targeted at teenagers for a change! I think it would be very amusing to wait until it comes out on video and watch it with my teens, and watch them squirm with embarrassment at the idea that older folks still have sex.
